WINTER WHEAT TRIAL RESULTS

Wheat

Winter Wheat (Triticum aestivum) typically is grown for grain and can provide most of the cover crop benefits of other cereal crops.

Winter Wheat takes up N relatively slowly in autumn but it is heavy N feeder in spring. Wheat enhances cycling of N, P and K.

As a autumn sown, wheat competes well with most weeds. Its rapid spring growth also helps supress weeds, by competing for light and surface nutrients.

Winter Wheat prefers well-drained soils and moderate fertility and a firm seedbed helps reduce winterkill. Wheat is a plentiful source of straw and root system also improves topsoil tilth.
